Abstract
This study aims to develop athlete training programs and diagnostic and treatment protocols for elbow injury patients by performing empirical analyses of the state of elbows of the middle school baseball athletes and the incidence of `Little league elbow¡¯. This study surveyed 100 athletes with current or past experience of the pitcher from schools in Seoul and Incheon area. We also surveyed the personal histories of injuries, and acquired radiographs of bilateral elbows. The average age of the sample was 14.2 and 77% have a history of previous elbow injuries to the pitching arm and 29% of them have current pain. Average resting period after initial injury was 16.5 days. We found that those who suffered current pain had 8.9 resting days in average. It is significantly short compared with 22.7 days of the resting period for those who don¡¯t have current elbow pain. The physical examination showed that 7% of the samples had flexion-contracture and 21% had valgus deformity. According to the radiographic review, medial epicondyle hypertrophy(81%) and cortical thickening of humerus(69%) were most frequently observed. Osteochondral abnormality of humeral capitellum(6%) and intraarticular loose bodies(6%) were also observed. Rather than consulting with the medical doctors, most of those who had injuries had only acupuncture or physical therapy without any accurate diagnosis. It is urgently necessary to let those athletes with elbow pain have enough resting time, accompanying accurate diagnosis and treatment.
